Easy Fish Curry With Tomatoes
A easy fish curry recipe made with only tomatoes and cumin.A spicy Tangy curry made without coconut, onion, ginger garlic and Garam masalas!!
How can I not love fish being a hardcore Odiya ? We Odiyas swear by the sweet taste of fresh water fish or Nai Macha and can have it fried, curried or steamed. Born and brought up in Odisha and eating the fresh water variety of fish, I have not been able to form a taste for the sea fish though I have spent years by the sea now. I still wait patiently for Sundays when fresh water fish arrives from the neighbouring state of Karnataka and you find all Odiyas and Bongs thronging in the small corner of the marketplace to stock up their freezer for the week.
I have memories of holidays spent during summer in my moms paternal side ancestral place where every house has a small pond behind, where they cultivate fish and eat fresh fish every single day. Early morning fishing with cousins and then wallowing and splashing in the pond with ducks swimming around us, have a finger licking rustic style fish curry and an array of dishes for lunch and then the lazy afternoon was spent sitting with a book or a comic on the cool stone steps of the pond under the shade of the swaying green coconut trees which surrounded the pond with the cool breeze touching your skin….oh what ecstasy! My digital generation children can never imagine that luxury .
This easy fish curry with no ginger garlic, no onion and no garam masalas is my Aai’s ( maternal grandmother)speciality which she used to serve with a dollop of ghee and rice. Just tomatoes and cumin impart a nice, spicy and tangy flavour to the Rohu curry with potatoes.
A tip to be followed while cooking this curry is not to cook the fish pieces in the gravy for more than 5 minutes as fish cooks fast and breaks into pieces.
